Hi John,

Any chance of getting a more detailed checklist of steps to take when migrating toward Wordpress Multi-User before you depart? The codex on WP's site is somewhat lacking in this regard, and am worried about causing massive issues when moving my hive. Have really appreciated your work, but totally understand your motivations for moving on.

Thanks,

I'm installing a sub directory blog on my website. The settings are:

domain: foo.com
sub directory: /foosub
table prefix: foo_

The first time I clicked install, it downloaded Magento to my computer. I have NO clue what that was about, so after trying again with the same result, changed the name of the directory and tried again. Now I get the error message that install.php has a redirect loop (using Firefox and Chrome; IE just kept trying) that will not resolve. I tried deleting cookies, etc., but nothing works.

If it matters, I have single sign on in the add on folder. I deleted it and retried, but that made no difference.

Any suggestions for me?

I'm in need of urgent help. I just added a site to my hive, and it broke the permalinks for all of my hive sites. Usually when this occurs I can just go and resave the permalink settings (/%category%/%postname%/) and it will work again, but this time that's not working.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any fixes? Some critical sites are not working right now because of this....

I still do not understand why/how wp-hive should, in any fashion, mess with the htaccess file. Here's the deal:

In a "normal" WP install if I update the permalinks, WP does its thing and properly updates the htaccess file.

In a wp-hive insstall, updating permalinks clears the WP htaccess section in the htaccess file (unless the htaccess file is "protected"). I even had it clear the htaccess file in one wp-hive install even though I haven't updated any permalinks.

This did not happen in the older versions of wp-hive or before WP 3.0. And, it does not happen in a "normal" install.

I believe this is a bug.

WP-Hive makes it very easy to mainain all one's blogs. But what about blogs hat we have installed in the past separately before using HP-Hive. How can we add them to the WP-Hive system to keep them also updated?
For example, I have an old blog that was installed with WP 2.0.1, using a separate database. How do I move it into hp-hive please?

I have been using the plugin for about 1.5 years, but have been able to upgrade because every time I do I get "Unknown Host" error. My sites are all working as long as I don't upgrade the plugin.

So I have created a local copy on my computer to finally figure out how to solve this once and for all. Well, as long as I use version 0.4.2 I have access to all.

My question is, how can I fix this or just isolate the main site and start fresh with the hive plugin. I have read all I could find till my eyes come out of my head and am no further other than getting very good at starting over again on my local installation.

So, I've had a hive setup for quite awhile. All of a sudden the top/primary domain in the hive is not doing anything. When I browse to it I just get a blank page or a 500 error. The other hive sites seem to be working just fine, so it appears to just be the parent site.

I need to know how to go about debugging this. Can I switch off wp-hive in one of the child sites and see if that will give me a clue? Will that cause huge problems if I do that? Or is there something else I can try?

Me again. Well, so far I've tried Quick Cache, WP Super Cache, HyperCache, and I even went a different direction and tried DB cache. They all give me the same result - the hive sub-sites start showing the top site. I've tried deleting the cache folder each time so I know it's not "saving" a prior set.

So, what do I need to do to get caching working? Is there something I should look at? (I really need this because these sites are starting to get hit hard, and I don't want to mess around with moving servers).

Wow, this was really scary. I have a mini-hive of some article directory sites (using the article directory plugin). Since that plugin is pretty database intensive, I was testing out caching solutions to speed it up a bit. QuickCache seemed to work ok, but then I ran across the W3 Cache plugin (supposedly endorsed by some big time bloggers). I installed it and suddenly all of the hive'd sites were just resolving to the top hive domain. Turned out the W3 Cache plugin DEACTIVATED the wp-hive plugin - every time I tried it.

So, why would it do that? That seems so strange.

Now, what I've noticed the last couple of sites I have installed is that the "install site" link in the Hive's dashboard does not work. I have to always use install.php appended to the new site domain to get it started. Is that intentional, or a bug?

Hi,

I've managed to setup W3 Total Cache (which is great caching plugin) for sites running on WP Hive. Maybe someone someday will find it usefull so there's the whole story on my blog: http://tech.barszcz.info/2010/08/30/wp-hive-w3-total-cache/

One important note though: this solution will only work for setups with sites installed on subdomains. I think it'll not work for sites in subdirectories.

I hope it will be helpful for somebody.

Hi!
I have doscovered a few plugins do not work as expected, especially in subsites:

RB Internal Links
Dagon Design Sitemap Generator

The issue is that only top-level pages (ie. pages in the top-level site) are recognized...

RB Internal Links, when activated in a subsite, doesn't dispay any pages/posts etc. at the level of the subsite, but only those at the top. This add lots of time to my workflow, as I need 3-4 steps, window openings etc, instead of 1.

Similarly for Dagon.

I have a hive set up on my shared hosting account right now - all my domains share the same IP address. There are currently 8 blogs on my hive.

I'm seriously considering upgrading to a reseller account and giving each site its own unique IP for performance reasons.

Will my hive be able to make that transition will me? Or will I be able to recreate my hive?

It took me some time to figure out how to get the hives set up. I used SSH to point my sites to the master hive site via terminal.

I'm not exactly sure how I'd point them if they're not on a shared hosting account but rather have their own individual IP. I am assuming I could do this, though...

So can I migrate my hive from a shared hosting to dedicated IP's... and any tips if so?

Using Wordpress Dashboard>>WP Hive>>Add New

I see nothing but the dashboard and nothing in the content area that would allow me to add anything.

I have gone through and tried changing permissions for all kinds of files and folders since then, and then subsequently resetting those permissions back to normal, and nothing. Please help.

OK, so I created a new hive. Did everything as I have in the past, but when I try to activate a new domain I get

"Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

I have the top domain activated. I have the new site directed at the hive domain. Everything looks good, bit I get that message.

I also noticed - when I go into the hive's edit page and try to change any of the domain names or prefixes, I get this error message

"There was an error saving the site."

What should I try? This hosting account has another hive defined that is working fine.

I have four blogs set up through WP Hive. Three of them work fine; the fourth is giving me trouble.

My default Wordpress installation is at mydomain.com/blog. That's the blog that's giving me trouble. When I tried logging into the Dashboard, I got a Wordpress message stating the database needed to be upgraded and it could take several minutes. I clicked on the upgrade button and the upgrade was accomplished quickly.

I tried logging in anew at mydomain.com/blog/wp-admin. I can see from the URL that a redirect happened because something told the browser to go instead to mydomain.com/wp-admin, and that URL in turn displays a redirect to the URL I entered in the first place, mydomain.com/blog/wp-admin. Weird.

The browser also displayed this message:

Not Found

The requested URL /wp-login.php was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache/2.2.14 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.14 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/5.2.12 mod_fastcgi/2.4.6 Phusion_Passenger/2.2.5 Server at carlospedraza.net Port 80

---
This is the URL that's displayed in the Address Bar:

http://carlospedraza.net/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3a%2f%2fcarlospedraza.net%2fblog%2fwp-admin%2f

While this is the URL that I entered:
http://carlospedraza.net/blog/wp-admin

I'm not sure if this is a WP Hive issue or simply a Wordpress issue, since this particular blog is the one created initially by my Wordpress installation, which is itself a redirect from carlospedraza.net to carlospedraza.net/blog.

I'd appreciate any advice or assistance.

Regards,
/carlos

Not sure if HIVE will solve this issue...I am having sort of similar issues with 1and1.com hosting on linux.
I am pulling out my hair trying figure out ways around it. but may just end up buying another hosting package everytime I need to launch a new site. here's my dilemma:

I have 3 domains: A.com, B.com, C.com

Installed WP on:

Root = A domain
Root/sub-dir-B = B domain
Root/sub-dir-C = C domain

WP-admin works fine when I use:
A.com/wp-admin
B.com/sub-dir-B/wp-admin
C.com/sub-dri-C/wp-admin

however, A.com/sub-dir-B or C/wp-admin also seems to pull up B.com / C.com/wp-admin

And when a user visits "B.com/sub-dir-B/index.php" or "C.com/sub-dir-C/index.php" it's all good, they get taken to the respective WP-sites and sub-dir, but if the user types "B.com or C.com" they get taken back to the Root, which is "A.com".

Yes, I've tried redirects, both HTTP, and Directory specific. The results were either 404, or themes completely disappear from B.com or C.com. A.com seems to be the dominant. Tried http.access, only breaking everything altogether. also tried 'settings' in wp-admin to point to dir, 404 again.

The desire is to have multiple domains all pointing to their respective sub-dir, without user having to type in the entire "domain.com/sub-dir" to get there. user should just type in "A.com, B.com or C.com" to get the correct redirect.

Tech support was zero help, and scoured the web for answers, nothing either. So ended up buying new hosting packages everytime for new wp sites.

am I crazy ? sorry if this sounds basic, but I am pretty new to this and would love to hear if anyone has a similar experience.

Thanks so much in advance!

Hi, all -

I installed Hive yesterday, and everything seemed to be working fine. I only have two blogs set up on it. I added a few other plugins yesterday - couldn't add them automatically, as the install page would hang up when trying to extract the files. I had to use FileZilla to upload them manually to my plugins folder.

This morning, I can go to the "Add New" plugins page, but if I try to click "install" on any of them from the first blog, I get taken to a blank page with just the wp menu bar across the top. If I try it from the second blog, I get "Error 500 - Internal server error."

I'm sorry if I'm not describing the problem well - I'm not super tech-savvy, but this was supposed to be an "easy" way to add multiple blogs on one installation. I've had nothing but trouble from it - the first time I installed it, it broke my entire site. Now this.
