Hello. A bit new to all this but really like your tool. I have a host who only allows 5 SQL databases. I have a site http://www.madeupname.com and I added hive to that wordpress site. I tried to install it using my madeupname.com database address and my http://www.madeupname1.com site (the 2nd site I need) as the domain. Then added wp_madeupname1 I installed it and it came up with an apache screen saying....

"This page is used to test the proper operation of the Apache HTTP server after it has been installed. If you can read this page it means that the Apache HTTP server installed at this site is working properly."

But I have no idea what to do or where to go next. Do I need to change or add a separate config file with wp_madeupname1 in it? The current config file just say wp_ at the moment. Seem to be going round in circles here. Many thanks for your help. Andy

I'am not a native english language.
I would be happier if there is a video tutorial on wp-hive including installation, plugin share, theme share on it. I mean a complete reference to at least why we must use a wp-hive (the overview). I think that would be a massive case studies on it.

Of course, i started by exploring this forums one by one before asking this.

BTW where is a showcase who use wp-hive (not just one i mean)?

The main thing you need to worry about is DNS propagation.

Really, you just need to make a 100% copy from the old host to the new host. Set up your domains, etc.. the same way, leaving the original copy of the site on the old host.

Then initiate the DNS changes to point all the domains to the new server, wait 48 hours, and then remove the content from the old host.

If you need to verify ownership for the domains with the new host, you can usually use a unique DNS subdomain or file that you upload to the site. Most hosts will give you the option to verify this way instead of actually pointing to the new sites.

You can use a your local "Hosts" file to manually access the new server and verify that all is working correctly before flipping the DNS switch.

I'm currently using godaddy to host my wp-hive (which uses subdomains), but have become fed up with the horrid speeds. I'm switching to a new host, but am not quite sure how to make the switch given the use of subdomains. I'd like to keep the same domain and subdomains, but just move everything to the new host.

Anyone faced a similar situation? Any tips? Thanks.

I have never used a frame redirect, and to be honest I didn't think it would work. But, if you say it does then I will believe you, but I can't vouch that it will always work.

Check the dns settings for http://www.site.com.

Also, you may want to try ignoring the frame redirect for now, and just focus on getting sub.newsite.com working correctly first.

I am doing a frame redirect from 1and1.com. So I only want http://www.site.com to be seen in the address bar. I did not specifically create sub.newsite.com. This is what I entered in WPhive as the domain. I believe in the past that's all I've had to do. It's working on all the other sites with the same type of frame redirect working also from 1and1.com.

Check how the forward is being done, and ensure it is a 301 redirect. During the installation, http://sub.newsite.com must be visible in the address bar and not http://www.site.com

However, the issue "Firefox can't find the server at sub.newsite.com" usually indicates a DNS issue, or that the server is not responding to the request. Can you ping sub.newsite.com?

Hello,

I already have 5 hive sites working fine and I've set them up the same way. Now I'm trying to add one more and I'm getting an error. Here's the process.

1. I've frame forwarded a site named http://www.site.com on my control panel at my hosting company to sub.newsite.com where sub.newsite.com is the hive site I've created.

I know it's working and forwarding properly because when I type in http://www.site.com where I used to get the generic "home of" page on the web host, I now get Server not found error.

Now here's what I've entered in WPhive:

Domain name: sub.newsite.com
Sub Directory: /
Prefix: something other than WP_

I am able to save the changes and the site shows up in the list just fine and shows that it's ready to install the site.

However, when I click install site I get the same server not found error: Firefox can't find the server at sub.newsite.com.

Any ideas?

Again, I've done this a few times and I have some hive sites running. I just can't make this one install?

Hi
I'm trying to install and use WP Hive to have two different blogs/domain in a single hosting.
I have two domain pointing to the same hosting space. I installed wp-hive and moved the robot.txt and map in the wp-hive subdirectory following your installation guide, then I activated the plugin.
More in detail now I have iltuoiphone pointing to first and original web site, and ilmioipad that would be point to the new site/wordpress installation (until now if I try iltuoiphone and ilmioipad via browser I get iltuoiphone website). This is the wphive configuration:

Site Name Prefix	Site ID
iltuoiphone.it/	wp_ 1 Visit Site
ilmioipad.it/ipad	imip_	2	Install Site

I made a subdirectory (ipad) in the home folder, where I copied a new installation of wordpress. I tried to launch the setup for the second wordpress installation but the webserver gives me a 404 error...
Moreover if I try to click install site in the wphive control panel I get a 404 error.

I'm a little bit confused, can you help me?
thank you in advance

Hi,

I am a developer and now trying WP-Hive willing to ease my life.

Here is my humble hint to complete the installation.

If, after you click on the Activate link to enable WP-Hive, you do not get the WP Hive settings menu (meaning the plugin was not activated), you may need to change the permissions on the wp-content folder, allowing your web server (apache in my case) to add files in there.

WP-Hive in-fact need to add a folder (wp-hive) and a file db.php in there.

:)

You do not want to 'redirect' using "Frame redirect" or an "HTTP redirect". Ask your host if they can "Point" the domain to the same folder as citysite.com (where index.php resides).

This seems to be domain only, so it would probably work with this configuration:

Domain Name: cityalumni.com
Sub Directory: /
Prefix: alumni_ (or something unique)

Then you would have two unique sites.

This is really difficult to understand. I'm going to use few words and perhaps try to get to the bottom of this.

citysite.com = Main site (with wp-hive installed)
(at my host [1and1], it is in a Home Directory which means wordpress is installed in /CitySite). So when I type the domain, it takes me to the domain.

I have other domain names that I would like add:

cityalumni.com
cityshipping.com
cityfirst.com

At my host I can make it a Home Directory, which means if you type cityalumni.com it goes to that site or I can forward it using a "Frame redirect" or an "HTTP redirect."

Ideally, my domain cityalumni.com would install somewhere like citysite.com/cityalumni - does this make sense?

If true:

1. How do I "add" the new site?

Domain Name:
Sub Directory:
Prefix:

Is it:

Domain Name: cityalumni.com
Sub Directory: /cityalumni
Prefix: alumni_ (or wp2_)

Is that correct?

2. Where do I point the domain to?

Does it point to /NewarkSite, newarksite.com, or something else?

Thank you.

I've worked with WP-Hive for a while now and it works wonderfully well for adding new sites. Donated $50 because it does such a great job.

But, is there any way to add existing sites other than exporting the articles from the old site, rebuilding a new site through Hive and then reimporting the existing articles?

This process seems fraught with difficulty, considering the need to fiddle with the domain names through the transition.

after reading up a lot about GoDaddy and CName and what not (thank god i don't have that) here is a word of advice to prevent serious pain...

if you can.. go for a system that has one hosting account and where you can add all of your domains to.. with GoDaddy, that would be the DeLuxe plan..

sounds kinda odd as with Strato that would be the cheap basic plan..

It took me a while to figure it out, because as usual, the documentation isn't all that clear and that is because it is written by the developer who is neck-deep into it and asumes the o so basic stuff is well known. This is just very common behaviour with us developers, and usually i have to rewrite my own stuff about 20 times before my clients vaguely understand what i am talking about...

So, here is what you do step by step, and hopefully it gets you going. Remeber though that every hosting/domian company can do things a bit different, so be creative on that part.

We have a domain called "website1.com" and it points to the root folder of your hosting space, or any directory in that space. It doesn't really matter.

Now upload Wordpress and install it as per default.. maybe you want to change the admin password or make some other changes to it, please do, but don't install WP-Hive just yet.. just make sure EVERYTHING works first.. create some posts and/or pages, get some plugins to work, a theme..

** side-note.. instead of the default "wp_" prefix for the database, you might want to change it to "wp_1_" or something easily recognizable just in case you will have to manually change things in the database

No problems?? GOOD!! lets get on with it then... install WP_Hive, just get the plugin and activate it.. that's all

Is your site still working? GOOD!!..

Now here comes the gritty bit.. adding additional sites.. and it has a really cool function that has not been mentioned here anywhere, so it will be a good surprise.

Some people not only have "website1.com" but also "website1.org" and "website1.net" .. and usually it will point to the exact same website

For this to work you need to have these domains pointing to the exact same spot as the "website1.com" .. basicely, look at the settings for the "com" domain and write everything down that might look important and copy those settings also to the "net" and "org" settings.

in WP-Hive you now have to add a new site.. choose as your domain "website1.net", let it point to the same place as your original site (usually / ) and use THE SAME (!!) database prefix. repeat this step for every com, net, org or whatever domain you may have. As it is using the same database prefix there is nothing to install..

Now we can also add another domain, say "website2.com"

the steps are the same, except now you chose a different database prefix, say "wp_2_".. this creates the option to make a totally different website.

as before, make sure your "website2.com" domain settings are also pointing to the same place as where Wordpress was installed. Again, basicaly take note of your "website1.com" settings and copy those over to your "website2.com" settings.

open a new browser window and go to your "website2.com" domain and you should see (again) a wordpress installation page.. just go ahead like always and make changes and all that.. note, all your plugins and templates are there.. but not activated.

hopefully this will help some people..

Hi There,

I will admit I got Hive working on my own site through sheer fluke and don't touch it now. I am trying to set it up on a friends' site and having trouble (0.5.3).

Main site (for brevity) is ut.com. Installed WP-Hive, nothing is visible (no posts, no front page, but admin access works fine. ut.com uses no subdirectory (like /blog). I deactivate Hive, and the site comes back.

The table prefix before Hive install = wp_. Prefix after Hive install = wp_

My initial goal was to ensure the main site stayed up whilst WP-Hive was installed, therefore had completed steps 1-3 of the documentation only.

Did I do something wrong, or is my expectation that everything should work just doing steps 1-3 wrong?

If you're getting an 'Unknown Host' error, then that means that WP Hive is working, but the sites is probably not set up correctly.

Ensure the domain / path / prefix are correct, and that you can access them by clicking "install site" or "view site" in the WP Hive admin page.

Hi, I also host with hostgator, having problems with the final steps. Hope you can help.

I pored over the different posts in the forum and tried Paul's suggestion to set the document root of my new subdomain to "/public_html". But accessing the subdomain on a browser page shows an error page: "Unknown Host"

I installed my first blog on my main domain using Fantastico. Could this be the reason why it's not working?

Would be really glad for any help :) Thanks.

Hi,

If WP Hive is installed and activated, you should see a menu section labeled "WP Hive" at the bottom left of the screen in WP Admin. If you don't, then there is likely a problem with the WP Hive installation.

Try re-installing, ensure the plugin is active, and check permissions on /wp-content/ to be sure it is writable during the plugin installation.

i have installed and then activated the wphive plugin via the wpadmin, but now i can't figure out step 4:
To add a new site, go to WP Admin > WP Hive > Add new and add any site you want.

does it mean that in the wpadmin i will see a button for wphive somehwere? i don't.

then i tried to access wphive by going to:
http://www.mysite.com/wordpress/wp-admin/wp-hive/.

please forgive my ignorance if this sounds like a stupid question - i have been a webdesigner for some time but this is my first try at using any kind of cms.

the main reason i am trying to install wphive is so that i can have differnet themes for different sections of the blog.... any info would be appreciated. thanks
