So far WP Hive seems to be the right choice for me, however, I would like to know if the following would be possible.

1. Have a top "Ad Stripe" that is common amongst each of the blogs in the Hive. I like to stripe at the top of the WPMU blogs that carries the same info through out each blog.

2. A categories plugin or widget that can be utilized within each blog in the Hive. Something like the old webring widgets.

3. Have the ability to add html/java to the main super admin blog that carries through to the other Hive blogs. For instance...if I was to put a RTA rating in the meta tags for the main blog, it would show up in all the blogs.

Thanks - Jay

All sites in a hive share the same pool of plugins. However, they do NOT share the same settings, including activation.

I run 4 sites in my hive. All the same plugins appear in the plugin panel on the Dashboard for all 4 sites. However, the different sites have different plugins activated, and settings are individually set on each site by each site's admin.

If you want to activate/deactivate a plugin or change its settings on one Hive site, go ahead. You'll see it doesn't change the settings on the other sites.

Also, a person granted admin privileges on one Hive site doesn't get admin privileges on any other Hive site unless you create a separate admin-level account on the other Hive site(s).

The _only_ plugin that doesn't seem to apply to is WP Hive itself. It has its own panel on the lefthand side of the Dashboard, and an admin-level person appears to have access to create a new site in the Hive or edit some limited but important settings in the database.

If you want multiple sites from one WP installation with true walls between sites, then WordpressMU is probably what you're looking for.

Maybe (likely) I'm missing something important or obvious here, but I've just installed a new WP site with WPHive, went through the install just like it was a generic WP site, and have ended up with a site which, in the admin pages, includes the same plugins as my 'original' site (which should exist as a completely separate site!).

This seems very peculiar to me, since I intended to have each of these new Hive sites be admin'ed/themed by a different person (students in a design class), but it appears that when they launch their own site, they'll be able to change the settings for Hive globally, adding, or even removing other Hive sites.

This doesn't make any sense at all.
Are plug-in settings shared among all the sites created?? The settings for the plugins all seem to be mirroring (or actually ARE) the settings for my 'original' install.

SO, if this is as wrong as it seems to me, what have I done wrong to get to this point??

OR, have I completely missed the point of this, and in fact, all the blogs created by Hive are intended to be admin'ed by the same person???

Thanks very much!

FYI, if you want to change the properties on the plugin, do so in the header of the main plugin file.

You can change the name (you might also need to change the filename and folder name). Or, if you want to prevent it from auto-updating, you could just set the current version property to something astronomical like 10000.

I agree with tacitus. It's not going to be easy to make this work.

WordPress advocates and strongly suggests that developers use the
$wpdb->prefix
notation when creating and accessing tables, effectivley preventing any sharing accross sites. Changing this is not really a viable option at this point.

Alternatively, we might get around it if there were way to decipher which options in the wp-options table are core, and which are from plugins. Again, very dicey in the implementation.

On a positive note, the next version of WP Hive will have a pretty robust API that should help with allowing other plugins to better support WP Hive. Will be interesting to see if it catches on..

The problem with modding the plugin yourself is that you don't always know where the plugin is getting its settings from. My plugin (AZIndex) uses its own table, but also stores some information in the main options table. This could get messy very fast if you don't find all the places a plugin stores its information.

I think the only way you can really do something like is for WP-Hive to provide plugin writers with a way to make plugins "WP-Hive aware" -- provide them with a some of functions they can use to set up the sharing of settings. Could be difficult to do, though.

This is similar - but a little different - than the question regarding "personal" templates.

Is there a way for all "hived" domains to share a single instance of a plugin? The specific plugin in question is the Article Templates plugin. It only makes sense for all of the sites to share in something that for all intents should be setup just once.

At first glance, it seems like it should be fairly simple. Let's say your initial install is using the prefix 'AA' in the database. To share the plugin, the all sub-sites should use the 'AA' version of the file (of which there should be only one). I could edit the plugin and "force" it to use the 'AA' version, but that seems dicey to me. Is there an easier way?

Now, let's say I do have to edit the plugin and hard-code the access to the tables involved. Can I somehow rename the plugin to something like "My Article Templates"? How does one go about doing something like that in WP? (I can think of many more plugins like this...)

Interesting, and I agree - it's definitley a concern. Most developers don't write their code thinking that it might be used for multiple blog installations.

It would be nice to eventually have a published set of recommendations on how to develop a WP Hive compatible plugin.

Maybe this should be a thread unto itself? Anyway, I thought I might list a couple plugins I have had issues with.

1. Smart Update Pinger. The log file ends up in the wp-content/wp-hive folder (or, at least, that's what happened to me). Which means that file could get pretty massive as blogs are added.

2. Unique Article Wizard. Uses a config file to store settings rather than the WP database. I had to create a workaround to give individual blogs their own config files.

I haven't done this particular upgrade with WP Hive yet, so it it is untested by me. I believe that link is intended to upgrade the database, and technically you 'should' need to run it for each blog to update each set of tables. If it doesn't request the upgrade, then there might be something else at play here. Definitely something to investigate...

Hey Iakong,

I think you can put more than one plugin to activate in the $wphive plugins array. If so you could just add all the plugins in your folder to the array (I haven't tried this myself yet!).

If you wanted it fully automated you might want to write a script that creates the array for you from the folder.

add

$wphive_plugins = array('wp-hive/wp-hive.php');
update_option('active_plugins', $wphive_plugins);

update_option('blogname', $blog_title);
update_option('admin_email', $user_email);
update_option('blog_public', $public);

The wp-hive plugin should now be activated on each new install.

Yes, you will need to run the upgrade script for each blog. For the WordPress install itself, that just means to log into the admin of each blog after an upgrade.

It is also similar for plugins. Depending on how the plugin is written, you may need to handle it specially so that it can run the database update. I've found that deactivating and then activating the plugin on each blog does the trick for the most part. But I haven't run into any major issues yet with this - in general, the plugins seem to run ok without doing anything.

Both of these issues of better handling of upgrades (Plugins and Core) are on the roadmap.

The plugin handles the requests for the three files: robots.txt, sitemap.xml, and favicon.ico.

Because each file is normally located in the root dir: eg:
example.com/favicon.ico
, this is a way to ensure that the correct file from
wp-content/wp-hive/example.com/
is served depending on the site that it is requested for.

You also need to ensure that these files don't exist in the root directory.

I'm just wondering, if I do a wordpress upgrade in my wordpress installation, do I have to run the upgrade script (in order to effect any database structure changes) in each blog under the hive?

Also, what about plugins upgrades? A good practice is to deactivate plugins first before upgrade (as what the automatic upgrades does starting with WP2.5). If I use the same plugin in various blogs within the same hive, and I upgrade a certain plugin from a particular blog, I think it does not necessarily deactivate the plugin first from the other blogs. How do we address this issue?
