I don't really have any instructions per-say. It's a matter of advising the webserver to send all requests for any of the IP Addresses to the same directory.

In Apache, you can do this using VHOSTS. In IIS, it's done in the main properties panel for the site.

@ikailo, with regard to your last comment, were those sites you set up under different IP addresses all under one Hive? If so, where can I find instructions for doing so?

PS. I'm on a Linux server with Firehost.com using Plesk.

Thanks Ikailo. It worked! I had not properly moved db.php. Other than that, I had a difficult time understanding the instructions. Here's some stuff you may want to include in steps 5 to 8 for people who don't often mess with stuff like this:

5. Use your Webserver Administration (Cpanel, IIS, etc..) to point any domains you want to use in the hive to the Wordpress directory --- In CPanel, this means to park any additional domains on the domain with the first hive install. This newly parked domain must not belong to a user in CPanel, and if it is on your list of accounts, you must delete it before proceeding. Only then may you park the domain on the primary hive domain. Once the domain is parked, go to the URL and you will be greeted by a WP install script.

In addition the part on ‘Google XML Sitemaps’ plugin could use a little more info:

First you must move the sitmap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz files to /wp-content/wp-hive/domainname.com/ on the primary hive site. After that is done, you can change the settings for the plugin so that is regenerates the sitemap files in the new folder.

For all sites added to the hive, first generate the sitemap.xml files to the root directory, and then move the newly generated files to the /wp-content/wp-hive/domainname.com/ folder for the new site.

Hope this helps others....

Looks like they're both pointing to the same directory, and they're both taking the same data from the database. Either WP Hive is not installed, or not installed correctly.

Check the
wphive_hosts
table to see if there is an entry for both hosts. Chances are they both have the same value for
prefix
. If they do, give youmademedoit.com a new, unique, prefix.

If there is no
wphive_hosts
table, then make sure
db.php
is in the
wp-content
directory.

Ok. Have existing install of WP on anthonycaccamo.com

Installed Hive.

Installed WP on youmademedoit.com. Tried to point (park) youmademedoit.com at anthoycaccamo.com -- Cpanel wouldn't let me do it. It told me that a user already owns youmademedoit.com, and that it cannot be parked. I deleted the user and domain from CPanel, and then was able to park youmademedoit.com at anthonycaccamo.com. YES!!! Or so I thought....

Now I go to youmademedoit.com and the blog from anthonycaccamo.com shows up. OK.

Problem: I never installed WP or hive on youmademedoit.com because I now have no where to put the files. youmademedoit.com simply shows the data from the WP directory of anthonycaccamo.com.

Not sure what to do now.......

It definitely sounds like the domains need to be in the same account. You would need to find out from your host how to move the domains between accounts and get around the error you're receiving.

Regarding my statement before, I was describing the scenario which is exactly the same as yours. DomainX.com was registered under Account1, then domainY.com under Account2. Now you need both domainX.com and domainY.com to be under Account1.

I uploaded the wordpress files directly on public_html via FTP and installed Wordpress and wp-hive as it says, I then added the site to be treated as hive in the WP-Hive admin, and tried to park domainY.com.

I get an error saying: "Error from park wrapper: seniordriver.net is owned by another user." I understand this because I own the domain but what I should do next?

Hi ikailo,

Thanks for your reply. This is the situation, I already have an account that is already registered (e.g. domainY.com) and I can manage with a master account (e.g. domainX.com). I can manage both accounts into one cPanel but they do have separate set of files. Is this what you mean by merging the domains into one account?

Sorry, I'm new to these stuff. I actually can't access domainX.com's files from domainY.com, so how do I go about merging or how do I point domainY.com to domainX.com's files?

All the sites in the hive need to have direct access to the Wordpress directory. If the separate accounts can access the same files, then there is no problem.

But if each account has it's own set of files, then you can't share the files and WP Hive won't work. You would need to merge all the domain names into a single account.

I've actually read the forums on how to install wp-hive 0.5, and it confuses me a lot about step 5. I understand that when pointing to a subdirectory from cPanel, one must go to Addon Domains to create a new domain that will run the Install Script like a fresh installation on the new site.

I have installed Wordpress & wp-hive on the master account/domain of my server and already have existing domains (separate accounts) that I plan to install Wordpress on. This means that I will not go through the Addon Domains module, because I already have existing domains. The question: Is it possible to treat the accounts as hives? If so, what would I have to do?

It's actually tricky because each site/account has its own identity and if I were to point the directory where Wordpress is installed, it would be from another account. Please help!

They are on the same server, so usually they would share the same IP address, yes. However, I did recently set up some sites on an IIS server that were on different IP addresses. It's not usually required, nor a very common configuration, but it possible to do if you have the right resources.

There is some debate as to whether Google includes the site's IP address in their ranking, so I really don't know if that has any bearing. If it does, it is quite marginal.

How are you pointing the child domain to the parent? Is it a redirect, or are you serving the same site, just under a different name?

If you are serving the same site under a different name, then Google will see duplicate content, which it heavily frowns upon. If you are doing a 301 redirect, then Google will only see the 'real' site, not the redirected one. And, if both sites are different (eg. sub.domain.com and domain.com), then Google sees them (although, this point can be debated a little) as two separate sites.

Yes, you can use very completely unique domain names in the hive. And just to clarify, you want to point domain1.com and domain2.com to the same file folder in your server, not pointing one to the other.

You are in the right area of CPanel - Addon domain, or a Parked domain. A parked domain forces you to use the same directory as the primary domain in the account, but the addon you can specify a subfolder to point it to. Generally you can use a parked domain if your WP files are in the root (/www, or /public_html) and use an addon domain if your WP files are in a subdirectory (/www/wordpress, or /public_html/wordpress)

Regarding the error you got from CPanel, it appears that that an entry for that domain name already exists on the server, and CPanel won't let you use it. That is an issue you'd have to take up with your web-host. If you do own the domain, then one thought is that it's possible you registered it on that server before using a different account.

Thanks for your response ikailo. However, despite trying everything mentioned by yourself and JC, I still couldn't get WP-Hive to do it's thing so to speak.

However, in my quest to find out why, I discovered that there are several versions of cpanel available and they can be changed through the Web Host Manager provided you have access to same. My cpanel was preset on version x which is the default. By changing the cpanel to version x3, you end up with a totally different interface.

I selected the sub domain option to set up the sub domain that I wanted to use with WP-Hive. Put in the sub domain name and then there is box underneath that doesn't show up on the default cpanel interface, called Document Root. This is initially filled in with the default path to the sub domain that you have just created. However, all you need to do is changed the path name to the directory or sub directory where the WP/WP-Hive files are located. Click the create button and the new sub domain is pointing to WP-Hive and everything works as it is supposed to. The same options are available on the Addon and Parked domain screens.
The other thing I have noticed is that no actual sub domain folder is created on the server either.

So, if you cannot get WP-Hive working properly, either go in to your Web Host Manager and change the cpanel to X3 or if you do not have access to WHM, ask your server company to do it for you.

I am intending setting up a multi sub domain site in the next few days using WP-Hive, now that I know that it works with my server, which incidentally is also in Canada - kiosk.ws.

You definitely don't want it to redirect - if it is a 301, then WP Hive can't read the proper hostname and decide which site the request is for. The idea is to have the webserver serve the files from the same directory for all the sites in the hive.

The setup is different in many webservers. I know in my CPanel, I need to set it up as an Addon domain (if I have it set up in a directory other than root) or as a parked domain (if I have it set up in the root directory).

Have a look at this post if you haven't yet.

Hi

Am trying to set WP-Hive up and get as far as the pointing part of the installation, but it doesn't want to play ball after that.

Just to explain, I have installed a new Wordpress blog in it's own sub directory as in http://www.mydomain.com/blog/

Have installed WP-Hive as per instructions and the two tables have been created in the SQL DB.

I have then set up a sub domain through cpanel like http://www.mysubdomain.mydomain.com

Now comes the problem as the only option I have in the cpanel sub domain screen is to redirect mysubdomain.mydomain.com to mydomain.com/blog/ which is where the wordpress files are. This sets up a 301 redirect from the sub domain to the blog directory. However, if I try to access the sub domain, all it does is redirect me to the blog front page which is what I would have expected from a 301 redirect.

Question is, does 'pointing the sub domain' mean redirect or am I missing something obvious here. The way I am doing it doesn't want to work, that's for sure.

Thanks for any help. WP-Hive will be a great time saver for me if I can get it working.

Hi this sounds like the perfect plugin for what I need. I have already created sub-domains at my Cpanel but please explain these two steps in more detail...

-Load the homepage of the first (or existing) blog - this sets up the hive.

-Use your Webserver Administration (Cpanel, IIS, etc..) to point any domains you want to use in the hive to the Wordpress directory.

Thanks

Sorry for the many posts, I found the problem for step 3 and overcame it:

do-prefix.php calls the function mkdir twice. On many servers this requires that the directories /blog, /blog/wp-content/ and /blog/wp-content/wp-hive have read/write access for the users "www" or "world", or just the rights "777". This is not secure, because anyone could write in it. Thus, the only way to overcome this problem was to chmod 777 for all these 3 directories during step 3 (and maybe 4).

I will report any problems in the next steps and (hopefully) respective solutions.

The main problem is that I cannot create directories by php scripts.

I got rid of the 1st warning:

Warning: mkdir() [function.mkdir]: Permission denied in /var/www/web14/html/sites/www.alex-droseltis.com/
public/updates/wp-content/plugins/wp-hive/
do-prefix.php on line 32

by creating the wp-content/wp-hive directory manually.

Could I do the same for the 2nd? If I could do this, I could go on to the next step of the installation. The 2nd warning is:

Warning: mkdir() [function.mkdir]:
No such file or directory in /var/www/web14/html/sites/www.alex-droseltis.com
/public/updates/wp-content/plugins/wp-hive/do-prefix.php on line 41

What directories should I create here? I need the variable $hostname for this.

Thanks for any help

Thank you for the answer!

Now I saw which db tables had the new values. The first blog is at main_domain/updates, the new tables were automatically named updateposts, updatepostmeta etc. I dropped them all and repeated the above procedure. Again, the 5min installation started, I gave an experimental title, and now, after the 5min page, a new blog was created but with many db-errors, I copy here the first 3:

########################

WordPress database error: [Duplicate entry 'uncategorized' for key 2]
INSERT INTO updateterms (name, slug, term_group) VALUES ('Uncategorized', 'uncategorized', '0')

WordPress database error: [Duplicate entry '1-category' for key 2]
INSERT INTO updateterm_taxonomy (term_id, taxonomy, description, parent, count) VALUES ('1', 'category', '', '0', '1')

WordPress database error: [Duplicate entry 'blogroll' for key 2]
INSERT INTO updateterms (name, slug, term_group) VALUES ('Blogroll', 'blogroll', '0')

########################

I think that I did not delete everything that was created!... I know almost nothing about mysql...

Summary: the 1st blog is installed at domain/updates. After compying db.php into wp-content and having reloaded the page of the blog, I get 2 warnings, reload, 5min install starts and a new blog is created, not in a subdomain, but exactly where the 1st blog was.

I'll keep on trying...

Glad to hear it is working better. Seems there might be some type of issue in your installation with the definition of WP_CONTENT_DIR.

With regards to deleting the previous blog created by WP hive, you need to remove any of the tables that were created with the new prefix for that particular domain (eg: example.com).

In the 'wphive_hosts' table, lookup the prefix value where the host is the domain name. (
SELECT prefix FROM wphive_hosts WHERE host = 'example.com'
). You will find a value like 'exa_'. You can delete any table in the database with that prefix.

Of course, always backup your database prior to starting.

Cheers.
