If you're getting the 'unknown host' error, then you've got it pointed correctly in your control panel (It should be pointing to the public_html directory).

Now, just add that site to the WP Hive admin page within your root site.

Domain: hivetest.bigideawebdesign.com
Subdirectory: /
Prefix: ht2_

If you are moving it from subdirectory to subdomain, then you will have to edit the home and siteurl options accordingly. There may be other factors to deal with as well. You may want to review this page for consideration.

I love wp-hive. It looks like it will make my life much easier.

I'm having a problem setting it up to do subdomains.

I'm on bluehost (shared) with a wordpress installation from simple scripts.

I have my wordpress installed in public_html (www).

I add a new site:

domain name: bigideawebdesign.com
subdirectory: /hivetest
prefix: ht2_

I save it and install it.

I make my permalinks pretty and chmod .htaccess (in public_html) to 444 (read only).

I create the site with title, login, password, email.

YAY!!! It works. I can see my site, login to wp-admin, change stuff. Hurrah!

Now... I want to make this installation a subdomain - hivetest.bigideawebdesign.com

I go into my cPanel -> subdomains

I type 'hivetest' as the subdomain for bigideawebdesign.com

document root: ?????

No matter what I've tried here (public_html, public_html/hivetest, public_html/wp-content, etc, etc...), I can't get the subdirectory to work. Depending on where I point it, I'll get a 404, or the generic bluehost.html site, or a blank page, or an 'unknown host' message.

What am I doing wrong?

Is it a problem with a simple scripts installation? Am I pointing to the wrong document root? Do I need to do some kind of editing in my .htaccess? Do I need a dedicated ip?

Any ideas?

I just added a site (not sub directory or subdomain) to an existing hive. When I click on install site I get "Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

So far I have
- checked the .htaccess (normal)

If the issue is with a subdomain, then it is more than likely having to do with the webserver configuration.

Ensure you are pointing, not redirecting. And, be sure the DNS is set up correctly.

Also, it would help if you let me know of any particular error you are a receiving, and/or let me know of the domain names in question.

I install Hive as prescribed by documentation. On a subdirectory install all goes well until the blog is created. I visit the new site and it is vanilla generic.(No theme no plugins) When I go to do a subdomain install I get hung up after saving changes. I can't get an install. I am pretty sure I pointed the subdomain correctly. Can you help? Any clue? Help!

Actually, that's exactly what WP Hive does: "using the same database but different tables changing the table prefix in the config file of the other installations.."

But instead of using multiple installations & config files, it uses just one.

Hi,
I read some topics and the documentation but I'm not sure about something.

What I want to do is creating a blog with a mobile version and 2 languages.
I would have the main blog in italian, a second version in english on a subdomain (en.blog.com) and then a mobile version on another subdomain (mobile.en.blog.oom/mobile.blog.com).

I'm using wordpress so basically I want the italian version to share the same database with its mobile site and simply change theme. the same goes for the english version.
Hive can do that, right?

plus, and here I'm just asking if I'm correct, I do need 2 installation of wordpress, right? one for the italian and one for the english. I can't do all with one database, right? because the posts will be the same but duplicated in different languages and I assume I need 2 databases otherwise when, for instance, I have a query calling for the last 5 posts it will get some in italian and some in english. correct?
Sorry, maybe it's silly stuff but I'm new at databases and wordpress. I built my own theme and I'm learning but I still have much to do.

Thanks for any heads up on hive and the rest.
I think hive could be what I'm looking for.

I was also confused about this, but once I thought about it, it made sense. You need to create the subdomain with its document root pointing to your original wordpress folder.

For the pointing, do you need wildcard settings to work?
My host provider is one.com, they provide subdomains in the form of "create a folder in the root with a index.html in it, and that becomes a subdomain".
is the equivalent of cPanel a DNSpanel? there i can add web alias, web forward, A, CNAME... i tried the webforward, but what it does is that is simply redirects from newblog.mysite.com to mysite.com
I have wordpress in a folder in the root called 'blog', but the index file is in the root. So i made the webforward, and when i type newblog.mysite.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php it only transforms to mysite.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php and it says that the installation is already present...
Any suggestion/comment?

I think that no matter what software you use (WPHive, WPMU, VMB), the web host needs to support sub domain pointing in order to use that feature.

The web server needs to recognize the (sub)domain name and forward it to the appropriate directory. Unless there is an entry specifically for "subomain.domain.com" on the server, it is supposed to reject the request.

Wow, thanks for the swift response!

No, I can't do any sort of pointing of directories to domains beyond creating .htaccess files, and I don't reallt fancy registering lots of new domains or changing hosts. I guess I'll try the subdomain option of WordPressMU, even if it might be hideously overpowered for my needs.

TACD, it should work for a "regular" (or "main") domain if you can link a directory to the domain. (i.e. - newdomain.com linked to /wp-hive directory).

If your host does not allow you to do the same thing for a sub-domain, then you're stuck as far as the sub-domain is concerned. But, you could still use wp-hive for the main domain and any other main domains you have. Or, you can switch to another host.

Yes, you can use very completely unique domain names in the hive. And just to clarify, you want to point domain1.com and domain2.com to the same file folder in your server, not pointing one to the other.

You are in the right area of CPanel - Addon domain, or a Parked domain. A parked domain forces you to use the same directory as the primary domain in the account, but the addon you can specify a subfolder to point it to. Generally you can use a parked domain if your WP files are in the root (/www, or /public_html) and use an addon domain if your WP files are in a subdirectory (/www/wordpress, or /public_html/wordpress)

Regarding the error you got from CPanel, it appears that that an entry for that domain name already exists on the server, and CPanel won't let you use it. That is an issue you'd have to take up with your web-host. If you do own the domain, then one thought is that it's possible you registered it on that server before using a different account.

Can you actually point domain1.com to domain2.com and manage 2 different domains or does this just work with subdomains within one domain?

If you can manage 2 different domains, what is the setup process in cPanel? When I tried to park one domain to another I got an error message stating, "Error from park wrapper: domain1.com is owned by another user."

To set up the domain pointing with Dreamhost, you go to the Manage Domains area, then Click on Add New Domain / Sub Domain button (located top center of page).

Fill in the Fully Hosted section fields and in the "Specify your web directory" field, enter the directory where you have your main (first) installation of wp-hive.

If the site you would like pointed to your wp-hive is already hosted by Dreamhost (as in your case I think), you can skip the Add New Domain / Sub Domain part and from the Manage your Domains area, instead just go to the domain (or sub domain) you want pointed, click on "Edit" in the Hosting column, then fill in or modify the "Specify your web directory" field so that it's the domain name where your first wp-hive install is in.

I was also a bit confused initially by how to set up the domain pointing and tried the above out with my Dreamhost account and it worked fine right away with the couple of blogs I tried to set up with the wp-hive plug-in and approach... really impressed with this plug-in.

I don't think you need to use Dreamhost's one click installs once you start using wp-hive since once you do the domain pointing and go to that domain or sub domain, it begins the one click install I think.

I'm still learning this myself but hope this helps out.

I'd like to try the hive plug-in on one domain that currently has two subdomains associated with it. The hosting service I use is dreamhost. Do you have any specific information how I point a subdomain to a folder on the main WP installation?

Also, can I use Dreamhost's one-click installs? This makes it easier for me to update WP.

Thanks,
Cris

The only way to point the domain is by using an interface to the webserver which can vary depending on the OS, type of webserver, or the company doing the hosting. CPanel is one of the most common so that's why it's most commonly referred to here.

The best place to get this information is from your website host. You would be looking to create an "addon domain", "subdomain", "secondary domain" (or something to that effect) that points to a specific folder on the server.

Or it might be worthwhile to post here who your host is, and maybe someone will be able to provide help for your specific case.

Can someone please tell me how the domain pointing is supposed to be set up WITHOUT referencing cPanel or other such control panels? I gather it's not a 301 redirect, but other than that, I can't figure out from the documentation or forums what type of redirect you are all actually setting up.

Thanks!

Sorry if this is a stupid question but am I correct in thinking that I need to have a fresh install of wordpress installed in each subdomain directory or does hive simply allow you to make posts to one admin and essentially tell it where to post?

Thanks for your response ikailo. However, despite trying everything mentioned by yourself and JC, I still couldn't get WP-Hive to do it's thing so to speak.

However, in my quest to find out why, I discovered that there are several versions of cpanel available and they can be changed through the Web Host Manager provided you have access to same. My cpanel was preset on version x which is the default. By changing the cpanel to version x3, you end up with a totally different interface.

I selected the sub domain option to set up the sub domain that I wanted to use with WP-Hive. Put in the sub domain name and then there is box underneath that doesn't show up on the default cpanel interface, called Document Root. This is initially filled in with the default path to the sub domain that you have just created. However, all you need to do is changed the path name to the directory or sub directory where the WP/WP-Hive files are located. Click the create button and the new sub domain is pointing to WP-Hive and everything works as it is supposed to. The same options are available on the Addon and Parked domain screens.
The other thing I have noticed is that no actual sub domain folder is created on the server either.

So, if you cannot get WP-Hive working properly, either go in to your Web Host Manager and change the cpanel to X3 or if you do not have access to WHM, ask your server company to do it for you.

I am intending setting up a multi sub domain site in the next few days using WP-Hive, now that I know that it works with my server, which incidentally is also in Canada - kiosk.ws.

You definitely don't want it to redirect - if it is a 301, then WP Hive can't read the proper hostname and decide which site the request is for. The idea is to have the webserver serve the files from the same directory for all the sites in the hive.

The setup is different in many webservers. I know in my CPanel, I need to set it up as an Addon domain (if I have it set up in a directory other than root) or as a parked domain (if I have it set up in the root directory).

Have a look at this post if you haven't yet.

Also have a look at the old site, JC has a good post here that might be of help.

Hi

Am trying to set WP-Hive up and get as far as the pointing part of the installation, but it doesn't want to play ball after that.

Just to explain, I have installed a new Wordpress blog in it's own sub directory as in http://www.mydomain.com/blog/

Have installed WP-Hive as per instructions and the two tables have been created in the SQL DB.

I have then set up a sub domain through cpanel like http://www.mysubdomain.mydomain.com

Now comes the problem as the only option I have in the cpanel sub domain screen is to redirect mysubdomain.mydomain.com to mydomain.com/blog/ which is where the wordpress files are. This sets up a 301 redirect from the sub domain to the blog directory. However, if I try to access the sub domain, all it does is redirect me to the blog front page which is what I would have expected from a 301 redirect.

Question is, does 'pointing the sub domain' mean redirect or am I missing something obvious here. The way I am doing it doesn't want to work, that's for sure.

Thanks for any help. WP-Hive will be a great time saver for me if I can get it working.

Hi mku,

You need to point the domain you are setting up to the subdirectory that the file 'index.php' is in, on your web server (WordPress Root).

Here are some cpanel instructions:

If you have the core files in the root directory, then use parking: http://www.cpanel.net/support/docs/11/cpanel/domains_parked.html

If the core files are in a subdirectory, then use addon domains: http://www.cpanel.net/support/docs/11/cpanel/domains_addon.html

Let me know if that helps.
