New Help with Installation - steps 5 and 6

    Hello, I am installing wp-hive and having issues. I have tried numerous times and cannot get step 5 and 6 of the installation to work. Here is what I have done.

    I already have a word press blog we have been using previously now since december, it is our first domain (example name) http://www.firstdomain.com – so step 1 was already done as it has been up and running for a few months.

    I then followed your step 2 and 3 exactly.

    Step 4, do you mean to just load the home page http://www.firstdomain.com into a browser? I did that as well, just brought up the home page in IE and Firefox. If you mean something else by loading, please let me know. Feel I may be missing something here with the word "loading". As I simply just loaded the http://www.firstdomain.com in a browser window, as I do everyday.

    Step 5,
    A)
    using Plesk, I pointed my completely separate domain name i.e. http://www.otherdomain.com to forward directly to the http://www.firstdomain.com site. That just physically forwarded it to my first domain.
    B)
    I then tried Step 5 again, and this time I pointed http://www.otherdomain.com to http://www.firstdomain.com/wp-content/wp-hive/ - this was a guess. This also didn’t allow for Step 6 to work.
    Step 6, on option A above, I tried running the installation script on the following:
    http://www.otherdomain.com/wp-admin/install.php
    It brought up webpage cannot be found.

    I’m hoping you see something obvious above that I’m not understanding. Please advise. Thank you. I'm normally okay with installations, so please advise.

    Forgot to mention, Rack Space is our host, we are on a Linux Server, we use Plesk for domain name setup.

    Hi Jenny,

    If you are using a feature that use the term 'forward', 'redirect', or that points to a URL (eg: http://www.domain.com), then it will not work.

    You need to find a feature that points to a physical directory on the server. (eg: /usr/public_html/wordpress).

    Sometimes called an Alias, Parked, or Addon domains.

    Some forums seem to suggest that it is not simple (or in some cases possible) to do in plesk.

    Others indicate that in Plesk 8 or more it can be accessed through Domain->Domain Aliases. See the end of this this article.

    Great, that worked well. Got through all steps. Now for my new confusion, thanks in advance on this next part.
    Here is first blog:

    Here is second blog:
    http://www.phuquocblog.com/
    I seem same plugins available to me for the 2nd new blog, but none of them are activated.
    I also see same themes available to me for the 2nd new blog, but why is the same theme (as the first) not activated?
    I guess I was under impression that same plugins as first blog would already be activated and that the same theme and style sheet etc. would be activated in the new blog?
    Am I doing something incorrectly?

    Also, I just did activate theme on 2nd blog, but I don't see any of my images, style sheet etc. I checked media library, none of my media files are here? Do I need reupload all here?

    I started reuploading images, setting background image etc. I just hit a bump. I know I changed something in my first blog a while back to allow the blog to be 960 width, if you look at 2nd blog, you will see it is defaulting to 780 width. How do I fix this? It needs to be the 960 width? I don't see how I can change this as I thought this site was using same files as other site for templates and style sheet?

    In 2nd blog you can see the extra white around it, the blog should be 960 width, just like the first blog we set up.

    I turned on widgets and got size issue fixed.
    So, am I doing this correctly, I need to activate all plugins, put back in all widgets, upload all of my images needed?

    Hi Jenny,

    Yes, it appears you are doing it correctly.

    A newly installed site is separate from the original site and is installed with a completely clean database. The plugins, themes, and widgets activation flags are stored in the database, so they will all be off when the new site is set up.

    The plugins and themes lists are available because it is reading all the files from the plugins or theme directory on the server, shared between all the sites. You will have to manually activate the appropriate one for each site as you see fit. (Lots of requests to change this, so will try to work it into a future release.)

    If you have a theme that has static URLs in it, then it will fail because the domain name is different than what it was written for. I've seen this issue before, so good to bring it up now. :)

    One issue with the images is that the references to the them are in the database. So, physically, you can access it at /wp-content/uploads/.../pic.jpg on each site but in the WP Admin / media section, you will only see a reference to it on the site that you uploaded it with.

    Hopefully that answers your questions a little bit more. :)

    Hi Jenny,

    I'm a total newbie at this. Could you give me some step-by-step instructions on how you were able to accomplish this? We're using Plesk, but don't understand where to set up the aliases (do we do them on the central account's plesk account or on the domain where we want the remote blog to be?).

    I just have no idea what is meant in the documentation by "If you are adding a new domain or subdomain, you must also point it (using DNS and Webserver) to the directory that contains index.php."

    Once the Plesk updates are made, then what is supposed to go into these fields in the central db where wp-hive is setup?

    Domain Name:
    Sub Directory:
    Prefix:

    I just have no idea what the setup is supposed to be... the more detail, the better please!
